Cacabey Mosque (Madrasah): A Center of Astronomy and Science from the Seljuk Era to Today

Located in the heart of Kırşehir, Cacabey Mosque (Madrasah) stands as one of the most significant scientific centers of the 13th century. Originally built as an observatory during the reign of Sultan Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev III in 1272, the structure was commissioned by Cacaoğlu Emir Nurettin, the governor of Kırşehir at the time.

Due to the blue ceramic decorations on its minaret, the mosque is also popularly known as "Cıncıklı Camii" among the locals. Over the centuries, it underwent multiple renovations and was later converted into a mosque. Today, it remains open for worship while also serving as a historical and cultural landmark for visitors.

Cacabey Madrasah: The Seljuk Astronomy School

🔭 Cacabey Madrasah was originally built as an observatory dedicated to astronomical studies.

🔭 The minaret functioned as a watchtower for observing celestial movements and the stars.

🔭 Apart from astronomy, subjects such as Turkish language, philosophy, and Sufism were also taught in the madrasah.

🔭 The courtyard features an open-domed fountain where water reflections were used for studying celestial bodies.

These unique features demonstrate that scientific advancements in the Seljuk era had reached an exceptionally advanced level, making Cacabey Madrasah one of the most significant educational institutions of its time.

Architectural Features: Rockets, Tiles, and Scientific Symbolism

🏛 One of the most striking elements of Cacabey Mosque is its stone and brick architecture, which incorporates scientific symbolism in its design.

📌 The four columns on the exterior of the mosque are thought to represent different stages of a rocket launch:

• The first column resembles a rocket waiting on a launchpad.

• The second column symbolizes a rocket preparing for takeoff.

• The third column appears as if it has just launched into the sky.

🚀 These columns have inspired researchers to suggest that the Seljuks had a deep interest in space and science, making this one of the earliest symbolic representations of space exploration.

🔹 The minaret's surface is adorned with blue ceramic tiles, which shimmer under sunlight, creating a dazzling visual effect.

🔹 The lower section of the minaret features circular brick patterns, while the upper section showcases zigzag motifs, reflecting a sophisticated mathematical and artistic design.

🎇 This fusion of science and art highlights the Seljuks' advanced understanding of both astronomy and architectural aesthetics.
