Turkey’s First Archaeological Museum
The Istanbul Archaeology Museums mark the beginning of modern museology in Turkey. While efforts to collect historical artifacts in the Ottoman Empire date back to the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, a formal museum institution was established in 1869 under the name “Müze-i Hümayun” (Imperial Museum).
Initially, the museum housed archaeological artifacts in the Hagia Irene Church, but due to space constraints, they were later transferred to the Tiled Pavilion (Çinili Köşk). In 1881, the appointment of Osman Hamdi Bey as the museum director led to significant advancements in Turkish museology. Excavations at Mount Nemrut, the Temple of Hecate in Lagina, and the necropolises of Myrina and Kyme uncovered a vast number of artifacts, necessitating a new museum building.
Architecture of the Istanbul Archaeology Museum
The museum building, completed in 1891, is one of the few structures in the world originally designed to serve as a museum.
