Rumelihisarı: The Symbol of Conquest

Hisarlar Museum brings together three of Istanbul’s most iconic fortress structures — Rumelihisarı, Anadoluhisarı, and Yedikulehisarı — under one unified heritage destination. The most prominent of these, Rumelihisarı (Rumeli Fortress), was built in 1452 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror just before the conquest of Constantinople.

Constructed directly across from Anadoluhisarı, Rumelihisarı was built in an astonishing four months with the strategic goal of blocking aid from the Black Sea and tightening the siege of the city. Covering 30 acres, the fortress features three large towers, 13 bastions, and massive connecting walls.
