Tyana Ancient City and Aqueducts: A Journey Through Roman History

Located in Kemerhisar, a town in Niğde’s Bor district, Tyana Ancient City and Aqueducts stand as a remarkable testament to Roman and Late Hittite civilizations. Once a flourishing capital and an important trade center, Tyana continues to intrigue visitors with its rich history, architectural remains, and impressive Roman aqueducts.

Tyana: A City of Ancient Civilizations

Tyana has been home to many great civilizations throughout history. Known as "Tuwanuwa" during the Hittite period and "Tyana" during the Roman era, the city served as the capital of the Late Hittite Kingdom. King Warpalawa, one of its most notable rulers, governed the city between 738-715 BC.

During the Roman period (30 BC - 395 AD), Tyana experienced its golden age, transforming into a major administrative and cultural hub. The city was adorned with grand palaces, temples, aqueducts, and residential structures, reflecting its importance in the Roman Empire. It even served twice as the capital of the Kingdom of Southern Cappadocia.

Tyana Aqueducts: A Marvel of Roman Engineering

One of the most fascinating structures in Tyana is its Roman aqueduct system, a prime example of ancient engineering excellence. Built during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, these aqueducts played a crucial role in providing water to the city.

💧 Roman Pool and Water Sources:

The Roman Pool, located in Bahçeli, was the primary water source of ancient Tyana. This massive water system was connected to the city through a series of aqueducts, giving the town Kemerhisar (meaning "Aqueduct Fortress") its name.

🏛 Features of the Aqueducts:

• The aqueducts originate from the Roman Pool and extend towards Kemerhisar.

• Some sections remain buried underground, while others are still visible above ground.

• A large portion of the aqueducts is still standing, showcasing the advanced construction techniques of the Roman period.

• Several sculptures and architectural artifacts unearthed from the site are now displayed at Niğde Museum.
