Imagine it: Around 250 AD, during the reign of Roman Emperor Decius, seven Christian youths flee persecution. Refusing to worship idols, they seek refuge in this very cave. The emperor orders the entrance sealed with stone.

And then — silence.

Centuries pass.

The young men awaken, unaware of the time that has passed. One of them, Yemliha, walks into the nearby city to buy bread. But when he pays with old coins, the townspeople stare in disbelief. It is no longer the reign of Decius. It is now the era of Emperor Theodosius II. Christianity is no longer outlawed — it has spread across the empire.

Yemliha returns to the cave to tell his companions. And together, in peace, they choose to rest once more — this time, forever.

⛪ Sacred to Both Faiths

In Christianity, this site in Ephesus is widely accepted as the Cave of the Seven Sleepers. Archaeological excavations have revealed an early Christian church built into the cave area, along with numerous tombs. Inscriptions on the church walls reference the seven saints, confirming the cave's spiritual significance.

In Islam, the story of the "People of the Cave" (Aṣḥāb al-Kahf) is mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf of the Qur'an. Although Muslim tradition often links the cave to sites in Tarsus or Afşin, many visitors still come to Ephesus to honor the same tale. Islamic versions also mention the faithful dog, Qitmir, who stood guard outside the cave.

Surrounded by the gentle slopes of Mount Panayır, the area is peaceful and untouched. Weathered stone steps lead to the church ruins. The inside of the cave is cool, dim, and filled with a quiet reverence.

From Vedius Gymnasium, follow the paved road that curves eastward. A short drive and a brief walk will bring you to this sacred site, with views of hills and ruins along the way.
