Located within the borders of Erdemli Village in Yeşilhisar District, Erdemli Valley is a breathtaking destination where ancient Christian history meets the raw beauty of nature. Shaped by centuries of erosion over volcanic lava flows from Mount Erciyes, the valley offers a peaceful and immersive journey into the heart of Anatolia — and entry is completely free for all visitors.

🌋 A Canyon Shaped by Nature and Time

Formed by the erosion of ancient lava fields, Erdemli Valley stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and features a stunning canyon-like landscape. It lies just 4 kilometers north of Yeşilhisar town center and approximately 65–69 kilometers from Kayseri city center.

🏛️ Rock-Cut Churches and Byzantine Frescoes

Along the valley walls, you’ll find 11 rock-carved churches from the Byzantine period, dated between the 10th and 13th centuries. Notable churches include:

  • Kilise Camisi
  • Church of St. Eustathios (H. Eustathios)
  • Church and Chapel of St. Nikolaos
  • Church of St. Michael
  • Church of the Twelve Apostles
  • Church of the Forty Martyrs
  • Single-Nave Church
  • Saray Monastery Church
  • Bear Church (Ayı Kilisesi)

These churches are decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible and the Torah, as well as individual figures such as saints, apostles, bishops, angels, and symbolic geometric or floral motifs.
