Historical Development
• Roman Period (3rd Century AD): The initial construction of Kayseri Castle took place during the reign of Emperor Gordian III (AD 238-244). The first references to the castle’s existence can be found on coins from this period.
• Byzantine Period (6th Century AD): In the 6th century, during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the castle walls were narrowed and reinforced to enhance its defense.
• Seljuk Period (12th Century): The castle took its present form under Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I. During this time, the structure underwent significant repairs and reinforcements.
• Dulkadirids and Karamanids Period (15th Century): In 1411, the castle was renovated by Hasan Bey, son of Nasreddin Mehmed of the Dulkadirids. Later, in 1466, it was restored by Pir Ahmet of the Karamanids under the order of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II.
Architectural Features
Kayseri Castle is divided into two main sections:
• Inner Fortress: The trapezoidal inner fortress is surrounded by 18 towers. Today, it has been extensively restored and serves as a venue for cultural events.
• Outer Fortress: The outer walls and towers, which once protected the city, have largely been destroyed over time, and only a few sections remain today. The total area of the outer walls covers approximately 14,223 m².
Kayseri Castle Today
With restoration efforts initiated in 2013, Kayseri Castle has been transformed into a Cultural and Art Center. Following the completion of renovations in September 2019, the Kayseri Archaeological Museum was also established within the castle. The museum houses 1,789 artifacts, spanning a vast historical timeline from 5500 BC to the late Ottoman period.
