🌍 Formation: Naturally formed due to karstic dissolution and collapse
🔎 Feature: Natural depressions ranging in depth from a few meters to hundreds of meters
How Were the Karapınar Sinkholes Formed?
Karapınar is one of Turkey’s regions with the highest number of sinkholes. These sinkholes form when underground water dissolves soluble rocks such as limestone, creating large cavities over time. Eventually, the ceiling of these cavities collapses, leading to the formation of large sinkholes.
Some sinkholes are filled with water, while others contain carbon dioxide and sulfur gases. Their depths can vary from just a few meters to several hundred meters. While some sinkholes have visible bottoms, others open into extensive cave systems, leading to even greater depths.
