History of Sille
One of Konya’s most significant historical districts, Sille has been a unique settlement where different cultures coexisted for centuries. With its natural landscape, historical texture, civil architecture, and traditional lifestyle, this region is one of the rare places that simultaneously bear the traces of Christianity, the Seljuks, and the Ottomans.
Sille’s history dates back to the Byzantine Empire. In 327 AD, Empress Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, stopped in Konya during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem. She was deeply impressed by the rock-carved sanctuaries from the early Christian period and decided to build a church in Sille, personally attending the foundation ceremony.
