One of Konya’s most important spiritual centers, Şems-i Tebrizi Mosque and Tomb is a sacred site dedicated to Şems-i Tebrizi, the influential mentor who played a pivotal role in the spiritual transformation of Mevlâna Celâleddîn-i Rûmî.
Located east of Alâeddin Hill, within a serene park, this tomb and mosque offer visitors a deeply spiritual and peaceful atmosphere.
The encounter between Mevlâna and Şems-i Tebrizi is regarded as a turning point in the emergence of the Mevlevi Order. Şems not only shaped Mevlâna’s philosophy but also left a lasting mark on the Sufi world, with his influence deeply reflected in Mevlâna’s Divan-ı Kebîr.
Architectural Features of Şems-i Tebrizi Mosque and Tomb
🏛 Seljuk-Style Tomb
🔹 The tomb, believed to hold Şems-i Tebrizi’s remains, is built in the traditional Seljuk mausoleum (kümbet) style.
🔹 Its original structure was later covered with a lead dome.
🔹 Beneath the dome lies a large sarcophagus, considered by many to be Şems-i Tebrizi’s final resting place.
