Alâeddin Mosque, one of the largest and most significant Great Mosques of the Anatolian Seljuks, stands majestically on Alâeddin Hill, in the heart of Konya. Its construction began during the reign of Sultan Rukn al-Din Mesud I (1116-1156) and was completed under Sultan Alâeddin Keykubad I in 1221.
The mosque's design blends traditional Islamic architecture with the unique artistic elements of the Seljuk period. Its vast interior, covered with wooden and earthen roofing, is supported by over forty marble columns, some of which date back to the Roman and Byzantine periods.
