🏔️ Mount Nif – A Legendary Peak Rising Above İzmir

Located to the east of the Gulf of İzmir (Smyrna),
Mount Nif stands at the intersection of the districts of Kemalpaşa, Buca, and Torbalı,
marking the westernmost extension of the Bozdağlar mountain range.
In antiquity, it was one of the 19 mountains known as Olympos, a name echoing sacred meaning across the ancient world.

🔱 The Ancient Past of Mount Nif

Since 1999, preliminary studies and archaeological surveys have revealed that Mount Nif was home to several ancient cultures.
In 2006, Professor Dr. Elif Tül Tulunay began leading full-scale excavations.

Key sites under excavation include:

Karamattepe (cemetery area)Başpınar Basilica, an early Christian structureFindings include ceramics and architectural remains dating from the 8th century BC to the 13th century AD,
spanning Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

🏛️ “The Zeugma of the West” – Roman Mosaic Villa

In the Kemalpaşa Organized Industrial Zone, rescue excavations unearthed the remains of a 4th-century Roman villa complex:

Spread over 550 square meters, the villa featured 11 rooms,
6 of which contained incredibly preserved mosaic floors. The mosaics depict now-extinct animals like the Anatolian leopard and Anatolian tiger,
along with a rich variety of plants. The pigments used were created with natural materials,
showcasing ancient mastery of color. This remarkable discovery has led many to call the site “The Zeugma of the West”.
