Located in the Konak district of İzmir, between Kemeraltı Bazaar and Kadifekale,
the Agora Open-Air Museum was once the administrative, social, cultural, and religious center
of the ancient city of Symrna during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Today, it stands as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the city,
offering a journey back in time to when İzmir was a bustling ancient metropolis.
🏺 What Is an “Agora”?
The word “agora” in Greek means city square, marketplace, or public gathering space.
In ancient Symrna, the agora was not only a place for trade, but the true heart of civic life.
📅 Most of the remains in the Agora date back to the 2nd century AD, during the Roman Empire.
🏛️ Built in line with the Hippodamian city plan, the structure was constructed in three levels,
close to the city center — making it one of the largest and best-preserved Ionian agoras known today.

The agora was built in a rectangular shape, featuring a central courtyard
surrounded by columns and arches across three levels, with grand staircases at the front.
