Located in northern İzmir, Pergamon (modern-day Bergama) is one of the most significant ancient cities of the Hellenistic and Roman world.
Despite centuries of invasions and destruction, its strategic location ensured continuous settlement.
In 2014, Pergamon was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List,
offering visitors a breathtaking glimpse into ancient urban planning, architecture, and intellectual life.
🏺 A City on the Hillside – Pergamon’s Unique Urban Design
Pergamon is an elevated hilltop settlement, where city planning was shaped by the steep terrain.
From as early as the 7th–6th century BCE, terraces were carved into the slopes to create space for buildings.
Over time, older terraces were reused and modified, which explains why limited traces remain from the city’s earliest phases.
The city was divided into two major parts:
