🏺 The City of the Mother Goddess
Located 45 km east of İzmir in the district of Torbalı, Metropolis is the first known settlement in the region. The city’s name means “City of the Mother Goddess,” referring to the ancient deity whose statue was discovered in the nearby area of Uyuzdere.
🏛️ Historical Background
Founded in the 3rd century BC during the Seleucid Kingdom.Flourished in the Hellenistic Period with monumental structures like the Temple of Ares, theater, and stoa.Expanded downhill during the Roman era, including constructions like the Roman House, Atrium, and Temples of Zeus and the Twelve Gods.Became a bishopric center in the Byzantine period, but declined in size due to wars and was reduced to the citadel and acropolis areas.
