Kayseri Clock Tower: A Monument Defying Time
Located at Republic Square, one of the most central spots in Kayseri, the Clock Tower stands as an important historical monument witnessing the city's rich past. Built between 1906 and 1909 by the order of Sultan Abdulhamid II, this tower is one of the classic Ottoman-era clock towers constructed during that period.
Architectural Features of the Clock Tower
The Kayseri Clock Tower is a square-planned, four-sided structure made of cut stone. The four clock faces are placed in a way that allows them to be easily seen from different parts of the city. The top of the tower features a metal roof with a decorative finial. Its design reflects the elegant simplicity of Ottoman architecture.
The clock tower was commissioned by Kayseri Governor Haydar Bey to help regulate timekeeping in the city. Right next to the tower, a small building known as the "Muvakkithane" (Time-Setting Center) was used to adjust official time and prayer schedules with the help of sundials.
Historical Significance
