About Akhan Caravanserai
Akhan Caravanserai, one of the last caravanserais of the Anatolian Seljuk State in the west, was built between 1253-1254 by Governor Seyfettin Karasungur bin Abdullah. Completed during the reign of Sultan Kaykaus II, the caravanserai follows the traditional Seljuk han architecture, consisting of both open and closed sections, covering a total area of 1,100 square meters.
Despite its asymmetrical plan, the caravanserai has two main sections: a square courtyard and a rectangular closed area. The covered section is divided into three naves, with the central nave being wider and higher than the side ones. Its roof is covered with vaults.
🕌 Architectural Features of the Caravanserai
✔ The arrangement of the closed space is symmetrical, whereas the courtyard section has an asymmetrical structure.
✔ The pointed arch entrance portal is designed in a niche-like form and is quite plain.
✔ The closed section has vaulted rooms on the sides, while the courtyard features arcades and two-story spaces.
