About Tripolis Ancient City
Located within the Buldan district of Denizli, Tripolis Ancient City is situated on the banks of the Büyük Menderes River, in the northeast of the Çürüksu (Lykos) Plain. Founded during the Hellenistic period under the name "Apollonia," the city later became one of the most significant border cities of the Lydia Region.
Tripolis was a major trade center throughout history, as it was located at the intersection of trade routes coming from major ancient cities such as Smyrna, Pergamon, and Ephesus. These routes extended through Hierapolis and Laodicea to the eastern and southern regions of Anatolia.
The city flourished during the Roman period, with the construction of a theater, bathhouses, city gates, and monumental structures. From the 13th century onward, Tripolis changed hands between the Byzantines and the Turks, ultimately coming under Ottoman rule in 1429.
