Ürgüp, one of the oldest and most significant settlements in Cappadocia, is located 20 km from Nevşehir. This fascinating town has been home to various civilizations throughout history, with its roots stretching back to the Paleolithic Age.
During the Byzantine period, Ürgüp was an important center of Christianity and served as a bishopric. Under the Seljuk rule, it was known as Başhisar, while during the Ottoman era, it was called Burgut Castle. With the proclamation of the Turkish Republic, the town was officially named Ürgüp. Throughout history, it has been a melting pot of Greek, Armenian, and Turkish cultures.

Ürgüp is one of Cappadocia’s most impressive towns, known for its rock-hewn architecture and stone mansions. The centuries-old tradition of carving homes into the rocks has merged with fine stone craftsmanship, creating a timeless architectural heritage.
The Esbelli and Yunak neighborhoods in Ürgüp showcase some of the finest examples of traditional Cappadocian stone architecture. Many historical mansions feature Seljuk and Ottoman architectural elements, with some parts carved into rock and others constructed with cut stone
