Ortahisar is one of the most authentic towns in Cappadocia, located just 6 km from Ürgüp. It is famous for its traditional stone houses, historical atmosphere, and natural cold storage caves. Although it is not as large or high as Uçhisar, Ortahisar has a unique charm and is considered one of Cappadocia’s hidden gems, attracting thousands of tourists every year.
The landmark of Ortahisar is the massive rock castle that stands in the middle of the town. Ortahisar Castle has served as a shelter and defensive structure for civilizations that lived in this region for centuries. THE HISTORY OF ORTAHİSAR
Ortahisar has been home to many civilizations throughout history, including the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. During the Byzantine period, the region was an important refuge for Christians, and cave churches and natural rock formations reflect the long history of settlement in the area.
