HISTORY OF ORTAHISAR CASTLE
The history of Ortahisar Castle dates back to the Hittites and was later used by the Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Seljuks.
📌 Byzantine Period:
The Byzantines used Ortahisar Castle as a secure refuge to protect the Cappadocian region. Tunnels, underground cities, shelters, and storage rooms within the castle date back to the Byzantine era.
📌 Seljuk Period:
When the Seljuks took control of Cappadocia, they continued to use Ortahisar Castle for military purposes. Renovations and additions made during the Seljuk period further enhanced the castle’s strategic significance.

During the Ottoman era, the castle lost its military importance, but settlements expanded around it, leading to the formation of new neighborhoods at the base of the castle.
