History and Architecture of Dedeköy Mosque

📖 Located in Emirhisar, a district of Çivril in Denizli, Dedeköy Mosque is one of the significant places of worship from the Ottoman period. Estimated to have been built in the 15th or 16th century, the mosque reflects a simple yet durable example of Ottoman architectural design with its square plan and domed structure.

🏗 Architectural Features

  • The mosque has a square plan measuring 14 x 14 meters.
  • The dome is supported by trompes that provide a transition from the square base to the upper structure.
  • The construction incorporates both brick and reused stones. While bricks were used for the dome, arches, and trompes, the walls were made of repurposed stone blocks.
  • The windows are arranged in two rows. The lower row consists of rectangular windows, while the upper row features pointed arch windows.
  • The mihrab is a five-sided niche with five rows of muqarnas and is crowned with a palmette pattern.
  • The wooden minbar has not survived over time, but its original location is still identifiable.

🕌 Minaret and Decorations

  • The minaret is located at the northeastern corner of the mosque and rises on a square base with a cylindrical body.
  • The height of the base aligns with the mosque’s walls, and the transition to the cylindrical brick shaft is made via a pyramidal corbel.
  • The minaret’s spire has collapsed over time.
  • Overall, the mosque is a relatively modest structure in terms of ornamentation. However, traces of palmette designs can still be observed on the trompe arches and sections of the dome.
