Derinkuyu Underground City – A Hidden World Beneath Cappadocia

Located in the Derinkuyu district of Nevşehir, the Derinkuyu Underground City is one of the most fascinating and extensive subterranean structures in the Cappadocia region. Built thanks to the soft volcanic rock formations unique to this landscape, this eight-level underground city was designed to accommodate a large community and support their needs for long-term living underground.

🕰️ A Historical Refuge of Early Christians

The origins of Derinkuyu date back as far as the Assyrian colonies. In the 2nd century AD, early Christians fleeing persecution under the Roman Empire came to Cappadocia via Antakya and Kayseri and began settling in these hidden cities beneath the earth.

  • The city is made up of interconnected rooms and chambers, many connected by narrow tunnels
  • At tunnel entrances and exits, large rolling stone doors were used for protection
  • Life underground was made possible with:
    • Storage rooms
    • Ventilation shafts
    • Wineries and kitchens
    • Churches and monasteries
    • Water wells and toilets
    • Meeting and communal rooms

One of the key features that distinguishes Derinkuyu from other underground cities (like Kaymaklı) is the inclusion of:

  • A missionary school,
  • A baptismal pool, and
  • A confession chamber, emphasizing the city's role as a spiritual and educational refuge.

🏛️ Visitor Information

  • 📍 Address: Bayramlı Mah., Niğde Street, 50700 Derinkuyu / Nevşehir
  • 🕳️ Only 10% of the entire city is open to visitors today
  • 🏛️ Open for visits since 1965, it is considered one of the deepest and most impressive underground cities in the world
