During the Byzantine period, Ürgüp was an important center of Christianity and served as a bishopric. Under the Seljuk rule, it was known as Başhisar, while during the Ottoman era, it was called Burgut Castle. With the proclamation of the Turkish Republic, the town was officially named Ürgüp. Throughout history, it has been a melting pot of Greek, Armenian, and Turkish cultures.
