Hacıbektaş Atatürk House Museum: A Historic Site Bearing Witness to the Foundations of the Republic

One of the key parts of Cappadocia’s cultural heritage, the Hacıbektaş Atatürk House Museum is the very house where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed during his visit to Hacıbektaş on December 22, 1919. During the War of Independence, as Atatürk guided both military and political actions, he stopped in Hacıbektaş on his way from the Sivas Congress to Ankara, holding meetings with locals and sharing his ideas about the foundations of the new Turkish Republic.

It is also known that during his visit, Atatürk visited the Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli Dervish Lodge. In order to commemorate this significant visit, the house where Atatürk stayed was restored and converted into a museum in 2001.

Architectural and Interior Features of the Museum

This two-story building, dated to the second half of the 19th century, reflects the simple and functional traits of traditional Turkish architecture. Constructed of sun-dried bricks using rubble masonry techniques, the museum displays include the rooms where Atatürk stayed, along with period documents.

First Floor:

• Library and Exhibition Hall – This section exhibits documents related to Atatürk’s visit to Hacıbektaş, photographs, and historical documents from that era.

Second Floor:

• Main Room – The room where Atatürk was accommodated, furnished with period-appropriate furniture.

• Study Room – The room where Mustafa Kemal worked during his visit.

• Bedroom – The room where Atatürk rested at night.

These areas bear witness to Atatürk’s visit to Hacıbektaş and reflect how he connected with the local people during the War of Independence.
