A Tower Witnessing Time in Istanbul

One of Istanbul’s most elegant clock towers, Dolmabahçe Clock Tower is among the most remarkable 19th-century structures reflecting the Ottoman Empire’s transition to Western architectural influences. It was built between 1890 and 1895 upon the order of Sultan Abdulhamid II and designed by the palace architect Sarkis Balyan.

The clock tower stands between Dolmabahçe Palace and Beşiktaş Square and represents the Ottoman Empire’s modernization efforts, influenced by Western urban planning and city aesthetics.

Architectural Features of Dolmabahçe Clock Tower

🏛 A square base measuring 8.5x8.5 meters
🌿 Intricate vegetal motifs and vases on each facade

The first floor features composite columns and decorated windows, while the second floor is adorned with elaborate embellishments. The upper floor is surrounded by a balustrade, completing the tower’s grand look with a wind vane and sculpted finials.

The clock mechanism was manufactured by Paul Garnier, a renowned French clockmaker, and is still functioning today.

How to Get to Dolmabahçe Clock Tower?

📍 Location: In front of Dolmabahçe Palace, between Beşiktaş and Kabataş.

🚋 Public Transportation:

  • Take IETT buses or a dolmuş (shared taxi) to Beşiktaş.
  • Use the Bağcılar-Kabataş tram line and get off at Kabataş station, then walk.
  • Take a ferry from Üsküdar-Kabataş or Kadıköy-Kabataş for a scenic trip across the Bosphorus.
