Süleymaniye Mosque, one of the most magnificent structures of the Ottoman Empire, was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and built between 1551 and 1558. Mimar Sinan, the greatest Ottoman architect, described this mosque as his “masterpiece at the journeyman stage”, symbolizing his architectural maturity.
The mosque dominates Istanbul’s skyline with its four towering minarets and a grand dome, which stands 53 meters high and 27.25 meters in diameter. The sound system is carefully designed, with 64 acoustic pots placed inside the dome to enhance the sound quality.
With its elegant stonework, spacious courtyard, intricate calligraphy, and stunning panoramic views, Süleymaniye Mosque is not only a place of worship but also a masterpiece of Ottoman engineering and aesthetics.
Architectural Features of Süleymaniye Mosque
🏛 It has four minarets and ten balconies (şerefes).
🔹 The four minarets symbolize Sultan Suleiman as the fourth Ottoman ruler after the conquest of Istanbul, while the ten balconies represent him as the 10th Ottoman sultan.
🔹 The minarets' arrangement resembles a person raising their hands in prayer.
🔹 The mosque’s main dome is supported by four massive granite columns, which Mimar Sinan associated with the Four Caliphs of Islam.
🔹 238 windows allow natural light to illuminate the interior beautifully.
🔹 The inscriptions inside the mosque were crafted by master calligraphers Ahmed Karahisari and Hasan Çelebi.
