Nuruosmaniye Mosque – The Light of the Ottomans in Stone

Located in the heart of Istanbul, right next to the Grand Bazaar, Nuruosmaniye Mosque stands out not only with its stunning architecture but also its historical and cultural significance. Meaning “The Light of the Ottomans,” this mosque is one of the finest examples of Ottoman Baroque style architecture.

🕌 Historical Background and Architecture

Construction of the mosque began during the reign of Sultan Mahmud I, and it was completed in 1755 under Sultan Osman III. Designed by architect Mustafa Ağa, the mosque is located in the district that bears its name.

More than just a place of worship, Nuruosmaniye was built as a complex (külliye) that includes a madrasa, soup kitchen, library, timekeeper’s room, public fountain, water taps, and a series of shops and inns. These structures highlight the social and religious importance of the complex during the Ottoman era.

The mosque's architecture reflects Baroque influences, with a semi-circular courtyard supported by 12 columns and crowned with 14 domes. The prayer hall itself is built on a square plan and is covered by a massive central dome supported by arches that rest directly on the walls.

✒️ Artistic Elements and Calligraphy

The mosque features 174 windows arranged in five rows, which fill the interior with natural light. The plaster windows and other decorative details reflect the Baroque style, rarely seen in Ottoman religious architecture.

Around the base of the dome, the Surah Al-Fath is inscribed in elegant script. The exterior inscriptions were done by Yedikuleli-Zâde Seyyid Abdülhalim, while the magnificent celi calligraphy inside was created by renowned artists Ali Ağa of Bursa and Katip-Zade Mehmed Refi Efendi.
