🏛 A Sacred Landmark of Byzantine Architecture
Kariye Mosque was originally the Church of the Chora, the centerpiece of the Khora Monastery complex. The name "Khora," meaning “outside the city” in Greek, was given because of its location beyond the ancient city walls of Constantinople. The word “Kariye” is the Turkish adaptation of “Khora.”
Built in the 6th century (527–565) during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, the structure was reconstructed over time and served as the imperial chapel during the Komnenos dynasty due to its proximity to the Blachernae Palace.
🎨 Famous for its Magnificent Mosaics and Frescoes
Kariye is considered one of the finest examples of Byzantine art, known especially for its breathtaking golden mosaics and frescoes that decorate the interior. These artworks depict:
- The life of the Virgin Mary
- The miracles and life of Jesus Christ
- The Last Judgment
- Various biblical scenes
The mosaics and frescos reflect exceptional craftsmanship and offer visitors a unique glimpse into medieval religious art.
🕌 From Church to Mosque to Museum—and Back Again
In 1511, the church was converted into a mosque by Grand Vizier Hadim Ali Pasha, who also added a madrasah (Islamic school) next to it.
In 1945, it was transformed into a museum, preserving its Christian artworks for public viewing.
On August 20, 2020, a presidential decree reconverted the structure into a mosque. During prayer times, curtains are used to respectfully cover the Christian imagery.
