This elegant residence, where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed during his visits to İzmir, offers a unique window into his life, his ideas, and the early days of the Turkish Republic.
🕰️ A House with Historical Significance
- Originally built between 1875–1880 by carpet trader Takfor Efendi as a private residence.
- Used as a headquarters by the Turkish army when they entered İzmir in 1922.
- On February 12, 1923, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed here for the first time during the İzmir Economic Congress.
- Between 1930 and 1934, Atatürk stayed in this house during each of his five visits to İzmir.
🏛️ Becoming a Museum
- In 1926, İzmir Municipality purchased the building and presented it to Atatürk.
- On September 11, 1941, marking the 19th anniversary of Atatürk’s arrival in İzmir, it opened as a museum.
- Restored and reopened in 1978 as the Atatürk and Ethnography Museum.
- After ethnographic artifacts were moved in 1988, it became solely the Atatürk Museum.
- Underwent further restoration from 1999 to 2001 and reopened in 2002.
🧱 Architectural Details
- Built in a neoclassical style, blending Ottoman and Levantine influences
- Covers 852 square meters, with a courtyard, arched back façade, and four levels (basement, ground, upper floor, and attic)
- Constructed with stone masonry; features a symmetrical layout with richly decorated interiors

- The rowboat Atatürk used upon arriving in İzmir
- Twin bronze knight statues at the foot of the marble staircase
- Living rooms with period furnishings, mirrors, and chandeliers
- Bathroom with Atatürk’s original bathrobe and personal items
- Bedroom with mahogany bed, sculptures, velvet armchairs, and a chaise lounge
- Study room featuring Atatürk’s oak desk, telephone, writing tools, and ashtray
- Dining room with a mahogany table and 10 chairs
- Library displaying 408 French encyclopedias (dated 1840–1913), along with books about Atatürk
– Includes 10 carved chairs depicting scenes from Shakespeare’s plays and decorative vases
