An Ancient Summit on the UNESCO World Heritage List

Located in northern İzmir, Pergamon (modern-day Bergama) is one of the most significant ancient cities of the Hellenistic and Roman world.
Despite centuries of invasions and destruction, its strategic location ensured continuous settlement.
In 2014, Pergamon was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List,
offering visitors a breathtaking glimpse into ancient urban planning, architecture, and intellectual life.

🏺 A City on the Hillside – Pergamon’s Unique Urban Design

Pergamon is an elevated hilltop settlement, where city planning was shaped by the steep terrain.
From as early as the 7th–6th century BCE, terraces were carved into the slopes to create space for buildings.
Over time, older terraces were reused and modified, which explains why limited traces remain from the city’s earliest phases.

The city was divided into two major parts:

  • Upper City (Acropolis): Political and intellectual hub where royalty, elites, and scholars resided
  • Lower City: Residential and commercial zones where the general population lived and worked

🏛️ Marvels of the Upper City: Theater, Temples & Library

Key structures in the Upper Acropolis include:

  • 🏛️ Temple of Athena with its grand stoas and monumental entrance
  • 📚 The Great Library of Pergamon, once home to over 200,000 scrolls
  • 🎭 The steepest ancient theater in the world, accommodating up to 10,000 spectators
  • ⚔️ Royal palaces and massive fortification walls
  • 🏛️ The Altar of Zeus, built to commemorate the victory over the Galatians

🏛️ The Middle and Lower City: Daily Life in Ancient Times

  • Middle City: Sacred areas such as the Sanctuaries of Hera and Demeter, Asklepion Temple, gymnasiums, and public fountains
  • Lower City: Included the Lower Agora, shops along the main road, and grand houses like the Attalos House

The main road connecting the lower and upper cities was wide, paved, and sloped with switchbacks — a masterpiece of ancient engineering.

🏛️ The Roman Era: Expansion and New Glory

During the 2nd century CE, under Emperors Trajan and Hadrian, Pergamon experienced a golden age.
The city expanded beyond its ancient walls and extended down into the plains with a grid-plan layout.

Significant Roman-era additions include:

  • 🏛️ The Temple of Serapis (Red Basilica)
  • 🎭 A Roman Theater, Amphitheater, and Stadium
