🏛️ İzmir Archaeology Museum – A Journey Through Time in the Heart of the Aegean

One of İzmir’s most important cultural landmarks,
the İzmir Archaeology Museum offers a fascinating journey through thousands of years of history,
from prehistoric civilizations to the Byzantine era, all showcased under one roof.

🏺 History and Development of the Museum

The first archaeology museum in İzmir was opened in 1927,
inside the Ayavukla (Gözlü) Church in Basmane, after three years of collecting and compiling artifacts.
As the number of archaeological finds from nearby ancient cities increased,
a second museum opened in Kültürpark in 1951.

Due to the overwhelming number of discoveries, a new and modern building was constructed
within Bahribaba Park in Konak, covering 5,000 m²,
and officially opened on February 11, 1984.

Today, the museum features state-of-the-art exhibition halls, restoration labs, storage,
a photo archive, library, and conference room — serving as both a cultural and educational hub.
