🌿 Karagöl Natural Crater Lake – A Mythical Escape in the Heart of İzmir

Nestled 810 meters above sea level on Mount Yamanlar in İzmir’s Karşıyaka district lies a hidden natural gem:
Karagöl Nature Park, home to a 35-hectare crater lake surrounded by lush pine and willow forests.
Both a tranquil escape and a place of legend, Karagöl invites nature lovers, hikers, and storytellers alike.

🔱 The Legend of Tantalus

Karagöl is not only a picturesque lake — it also carries a deep-rooted mythological identity.
According to legend, King Tantalus of Phrygia, who once ruled Western Anatolia, defied the Olympian gods.
As punishment, Zeus cast him into a chasm on Mount Spilios (today’s Mount Yamanlar),
where he was condemned to eternal hunger and thirst —
an eternal torment now known worldwide as the “Tantalus Punishment.”

Over time, this mythic chasm turned into a lake — today known as Karagöl,
once referred to as the Lake of Tantalus by ancient historians, including İzmir-born Homer.
