- Founded in the 3rd century BC during the Seleucid Kingdom.
- Flourished in the Hellenistic Period with monumental structures like the Temple of Ares, theater, and stoa.
- Expanded downhill during the Roman era, including constructions like the Roman House, Atrium, and Temples of Zeus and the Twelve Gods.
- Became a bishopric center in the Byzantine period, but declined in size due to wars and was reduced to the citadel and acropolis areas.
🎭 The Ancient Theater of Metropolis
Built on a natural slope and made entirely of marble, this 8,000–10,000 seat theater hosted social, cultural, and artistic events. Key features include:
- Orchestra, stage building, seating areas, and special seats for nobles and guests
- Behind the elite seats, carvings of Zeus’s thunderbolt and Ares with a shield
- Divided by diazomas and decorated with lion paw motifs on stair edges
- Expanded during the Roman era, ceased function in the 4th century AD
