🏗️ Why and When Was It Built?

The Izmir Clock Tower was built in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II’s ascension to the Ottoman throne.
It was commissioned by a committee led by Governor Kıbrıslı Kâmil Pasha, his son Said Pasha, and Mayor Eşref Pasha.

🧱 Architectural Highlights

• Height: 25 meters
• Structure: 4 stories, octagonal base
• Architectural Style: Orientalist, with North African and Andalusian influences
• Architect: French-born İzmir resident Raymond Charles Pere

🏛️ Notable design features include:

• Horseshoe arches, richly detailed column capitals, and
• Façades covered in intricate decoration with no empty surfaces — a hallmark of North African–inspired aesthetics.

⏰ The clock mechanism was a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II.
🟢 Red and green mosaics used in the tower came from Ephesus,
🪨 While the main stones were sourced from Sarayköy (Denizli).

Fun Fact: Architect Pere also built a nearby octagonal fountain with 25 faucets, symbolizing the Sultan’s 25th year on the throne. Unfortunately, it was destroyed along with Sarı Kışla (Yellow Barracks).

🧿 Earthquakes and the Passage of Time

• The tower sustained damage during two major earthquakes — in 1928 and 1974.
• The 1974 quake, measuring 5.2, caused the clock to stop at exactly 02:04 AM — a moment frozen in time.
• After a two-year restoration, the clock was restarted and continues to work today.
