🏛️ Birgi Çakırağa Mansion – A Wooden Masterpiece of Ottoman Elegance
Nestled in the charming town of Birgi, near Ödemiş in İzmir Province,
Çakırağa Mansion stands as one of the finest surviving examples of Ottoman civil architecture in the Aegean region.
Built in the 18th century, it offers a rare glimpse into traditional Ottoman domestic life, complete with exquisite wooden craftsmanship and heartfelt personal touches.
🏗️ History & Architecture
The mansion was commissioned in 1761 by Mehmet Bey of the Çakıroğlu family, a wealthy merchant.
It is a three-story structure designed to accommodate seasonal living:
- Ground Floor: Features a stone-paved entrance (taşlık), kitchen, stables, and a guest waiting room
- Second Floor (Winter): Enclosed and well-insulated for colder months, rooms are arranged around a central hall and heated by fireplaces
- Top Floor (Summer): Bright and airy, decorated with vivid wall paintings and elaborate ceiling ornaments
All rooms open into a spacious sofa (hallway).
The hand-painted wooden ceilings, wall frescos, and ornate cupboards highlight the refined taste and artisanry of the Ottoman era.
🖼️ Art, Sentiment, and Symbolism
Çakıroğlu Mehmet Bey had two wives — one from İzmir and the other from Istanbul.
To ease their homesickness, he had wall paintings made in their rooms depicting views of their hometowns.
These paintings are not only emotionally touching but also serve as valuable visual records of 18th-century İzmir and Istanbul, showcasing the art and cityscape of the time.
🌿 The Garden and Exterior
Surrounded by high stone walls, the mansion is hidden from the road and opens into a courtyard filled with floral patterns and motifs.
The exterior is as charming as the interior, giving visitors a full sensory experience of Ottoman aesthetic principles.

- 1977: Restoration initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism
- 1983: Surrounding area was expropriated to preserve the historic setting
- 1993: First-phase restoration completed by the General Directorate of Monuments and Museums
