🙏 House of the Virgin Mary – A Sacred Sanctuary in the Hills of İzmir
Just 9 kilometers from Selçuk, on the tranquil slopes of Mount Bülbül, lies one of the most spiritually significant sites in the Christian world:
The House of the Virgin Mary — a serene and sacred place believed to be where Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent her final years.
🕊️ A Spiritual Legacy Carved in Stone
According to Christian tradition, after the crucifixion of Jesus, St. John the Apostle brought Mary to Ephesus for her safety and care.
This peaceful stone house, hidden among trees and mountains, is believed to have been Mary’s last earthly home.
✨ A Discovery Inspired by a Dream
In the 19th century, German nun Anne Catherine Emmerich claimed to have seen visions describing the location of Mary's final dwelling.
Her detailed descriptions led Lazarist priests to Mount Bülbül in 1891, where they uncovered a small, cross-shaped stone building.
This discovery became a major revelation for the Christian world.
🏛️ Architecture and Sacred Atmosphere
- The house has a cross-shaped floor plan with a central dome
- Inside is a simple altar and a space for quiet prayer
- Nearby you'll find the famous Wishing Wall, where visitors leave written prayers
- A sacred spring flows beside the building — many believe it has healing properties
- The site is also revered by Muslims, who honor Mary (Meryem Ana) as one of the most virtuous women in history

In 1967, Pope Paul VI visited the site, officially recognizing it as a holy place.
