Located along the bustling Anafartalar Street in İzmir’s Konak district, Kestanepazarı Mosque is one of the city's historic treasures. Tucked among busy commercial centers, it offers a tranquil retreat with its elegant Ottoman architecture and centuries-old history.
🏗️ Historical Background & Architecture
According to the famous Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi, the area where the mosque stands today was once part of İzmir’s inner harbor, which made constructing the minaret particularly challenging. Built in 1667, the mosque features a square plan topped with a large central dome, surrounded by four smaller domes.
One of the mosque’s most unique features is its mihrab, believed to have been brought from the Isa Bey Mosque in Selçuk. The detailed stone craftsmanship is truly remarkable. Facing the courtyard, stained glass panels adorn the wall behind the mihrab, adding vivid color and light to the prayer space.
The portico (last congregation area) includes three small domes, and an inscription above the entrance provides historical context for the mosque.

Kestanepazarı Mosque is located in Ahmetağa Mahallesi, 872 Sokak, in the Konak district of İzmir. It is within walking distance from Konak Ferry Terminal and easily accessible from Alsancak and Basmane.
